What can Counselling help with?
Many of the people that I work with come to counselling because of problems in their relationships, or because they have experienced trauma. This trauma can include a one off incident that was incredibly frightening, or it could be behaviours that have been continuing to have an affect for some time so as domestic abuse that was experienced as a child.
However, counselling can help with a wide range of issues. These can include feelings of anxiety, depression and stress. Counselling can be beneficial for working with life events, these might include, bereavement, loss, work issues and long term illness.
What might be the benefits of Counselling?
Counselling is about really listening. As your counsellor I would listen attentively to what you say, and how you say it. Some people describe this as listening to the music behind the words. Just being truly heard can be very beneficial and healing. There feels to be something really important in having your feelings heard and understood and no longer having to hold things on your own.
In addition, counselling can also have other benefits, firstly counselling can help you make sense of your feelings and emotions and gain a different level of understanding. Secondly, counselling can help you to explore different ways of moving forwards, this may mean making changes in your life or finding new coping strategies. Finally, counselling can help you to gain self-awareness, improve your confidence and and raise your self-esteem.
